The vibrant roots of Sikh Religion were laid down in the 15th century in Punjab region of India. Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikh religion was the very first of the ten gurus of Sikhs. Guru Nanak Dev Ji preached the peaceful message of “Ik Onkar” meaning “one God” who resides in each of his crafts and is the only truth.

The word Sikh means “a learner” and Sikhism was based on a very strong foundation of learning preached by Gurus as the best means to get rid of the darkness of life. The people of Sikh religion whole-heartedly follow the message of faith and devotional love towards one omnipresent God by focusing their deeds towards strengthening a pluralistic society where there is harmony among people of all caste, creed and color. There are three core tenets of Sikh religion. Meditating upon the name of God (praying), earning a living by honest means and sharing the fruits of one’s labor with others. The Sikhs revere and respect the Guru Granth Sahib as the living guru and the divine light of God. As narrated beautifully by Giani Sant Singh Ji Maskeen in his discourses “Jo prakash de roop wich Parmatama hai ohi shabad de roop wich Guru hai” meaning that Just like the divine light is the aspect of supreme lord, the shabd guru is an aspect of guru’s presence and there is no difference between the  supreme lord and the Shabd guru. "ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਹੀ ਭੇਦ"

Guru granth sahib is the eternal guru of the sikhs. Guru Granth sahib is the holy scripture of the sikh that is treated with the utmost reverence and respected by sikhs as The Living Guru not nearly a scripture. Guru Granth Sahib ji has a universal message of Oneness and rejects all divisions of human beings on the pretext of caste, creed, color, and gender. According to Prof. J C Archer the religion of the Guru Granth is a universal and practical religion…...the world needs today its message of peace and love.

Gurbani or the Holy Word was given to humanity by the Sikh Gurus through direct command from God.
The revelation came to the Guru at the highest level of consciousness, a divine experience, which cannot be explained in words.

“ਜੈਸੀ ਮੈ ਆਵੈ ਖਸਮ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ, ਤੈਸੜਾ ਕਰੀ ਗਿਆਨ ਵੇ ਲਾਲੋ॥”  (ਅੰਗ 422)

(As the word of the master comes to me, so I make it known, O Lalo)

“ਹਉ ਆਪਹੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਨ ਜਾ ਣਦਾ ਮੈ ਕਹਿਆ ਸਭ ਹੁਕਮਾਉ ਜੀਉ॥” ((ਅੰਗ  765)

(I do not speak of my own and it is as commanded by God)
